Nonprofit Provides $16.5 Million in Eviction Relief

Based on reporting by Good News Network.

The Star-C Program, a nonprofit based in Atlanta, has made significant strides in providing eviction relief during the ongoing housing crisis. Since its inception during the COVID pandemic, the program has successfully assisted over 5,500 families, ensuring they can remain in their homes.

Initially launched as a modest $50,000 GoFundMe campaign, the Star-C Program has impressively raised over $16.5 million to support rent payments for those in need. This financial assistance has been crucial for many renters facing temporary challenges.

In addition to direct financial support, the Star-C Program connects tenants with various resources, including after-school programs, summer camps, and food assistance. This holistic approach aims to address the broader needs of families struggling with housing insecurity.

The program collaborates with conscientious landlords who are dedicated to maintaining affordable rents for families earning at or below 80% of the area median income. This partnership has led to the inclusion of over 330 apartment communities, encompassing approximately 64,000 apartment units.

Despite its success, the nonprofit has recently announced that it is not accepting new applications for rental assistance, having reached its maximum capacity for the current funding cycle. This highlights the ongoing demand for support in the community.

The Star-C Program’s efforts not only provide immediate relief but also contribute to long-term stability for families, with many participants eventually transitioning from renting to homeownership.
