Public Hearing on Scranton Beltway Project Scheduled
Based on reporting by WVIA News.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is set to hold a public hearing on October 28, 2026, to discuss proposed revisions for the Wyoming Valley Interchange as part of the Scranton Beltway project. This hearing will take place at Pittston Area High School, with registration beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The purpose of the hearing is to address the Environmental Assessment information and proposed design revisions specifically in the Wyoming Valley Interchange area. Public testimony will be taken from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and participants are encouraged to register in advance.
The Scranton Beltway project, first proposed in 2018, aims to create high-speed connections between Interstate 81 and Interstate 476. Turnpike officials believe this will help alleviate congestion on the heavily used I-81 corridor in the Scranton area.
Construction for the Scranton Beltway is tentatively scheduled to begin between 2029 and 2032. The project is expected to cost around $245 million, primarily funded through toll revenue and $40 million in federal funds.
Concerns have been raised by community members regarding the potential demolition of homes and the impact of toll costs on motorists. The current toll for a two-axle vehicle traveling between the Wyoming Valley and Clarks Summit interchanges is $3.44 with EZ-Pass and $6.88 without.
